First and Goal! Marketing Lessons From The Gridiron

I bleed orange and blue. I wake up on fall Saturday mornings to my husband—a Michigan alum—singing “Hail to the Victors” as he races to turn on ESPN’s GameDay. Anyone who is even passingly familiar with college football knows what I’m talking about. I went to the University of Florida, a school where football is king. And by the time I graduated, I was a die–hard Gator fan.

Now that I’m a marketing professional, I often wonder how UF did it. How did four short years at the school turn me into a devoted fan for life, loathing all rivals (my apologies to any Seminole or Bulldog fans out there) and championing the Gators every chance I get? From my car, to my wardrobe to my desk at work – it’s orange–and–blue through and through. Talk about devotion!

Make no mistake about it, college football is big business. And like every intelligent businessperson knows, an essential element to success is developing a strong marketing formula and maintaining a brand that emphasizes customer loyalty and satisfaction. College football is all that. Colors, mascots, cheerleaders, pep rallies. Hook ‘em Horns down in Texas. Touchdown Jesus at Notre Dame. Alabama’s Roll Tide. Oregon’s Nike–designed splashy uniforms. Yep, it’s all about branding.

I try to remember that game plan for every project I work on at Modern Postcard. For me it’s all about happy fans!
